Lake Superior Cribbage is an educational game which allows players to travel the 1,300 mile Lake Superior Circle Tour while using the gamesmanship principles of standard 2-handed cribbage.

Objective o

A total of 121 spaces or points must be scored by a player through the selection and play of cards, prior to the opponent. The gameboard features an actual Nimbus 7 satellite image from space of Lake Superior. Instead of holes in a board, LSC has pegging 121 spaces ... the best of tourism stops around the "big lake".

Players And Equipment o

The LSC simulation game is a 2-handed cribbage game with educational game questions built into the rules. Players are provided a satellite image gameboard with a 121 space race track around Lake superior,, a standard deck of playing cards, steel game tokens. Start And Finish o

Players begin at the green space marked START and finish at the red space marked GAME SPACE. The Winner of Lake Superior Cribbage is the first player who lands on the GAME SPACE by scoring 121 or more spaces.

Historic Iron Pegs: Great Lakes Steel NUTS and BOLTS were selected as the game tokens because of steel's lasting durability; easy junk drawer replacement if lost; and the humor in being the 'nut'!

(Bonus Play) When a player lands on a TIC (Travel Information Centre) space, the player draws a game card and answers the question. (Right answer answer moves two spaces, wrong answer moves back one spaces.)

Penality Play: If a player lands on the Hurley Saloon District space, the player must retreat to the Wisonsin Border space.

Card Dealing o

Each player is dealt six (6) cards, one at a time, face down. Dealing of the cards alternates with the dealer having the advantage of a Crib or extra hand to score spaces.

Rank and Pip Value o

The four suits are equal and the cards rank from King down to Ace. The Pip Card values are K-10, Q-10, J-10, 10-10, 9-9, 8-8, 7-7, 6-6, 5-5, 4-4, 3-3, 2-2, A-1.

The Crib o

Each player puts two (2) cards in the dealer's crib, face down. This hand is a bonus for the dealer and is counted after the play of players is concluded. Always place the crib cards and deck of playing cards next to the dealer to insure proper counting.

The Cut o

Each player now has four (4) cards. The pone cuts the cards, the dealer turns the starter card up and puts it on top of the deck of cards with the remaining cards facing down. If a Jack (His Heels) is cut, the dealer moves ahead two (2) spaces.

Player's Play o

The pone begins play by laying a card down and announcing the counting value. The dealer puts a card down and announces the combined score. The play continues with alternate counting values being announced until 31 or less is reached. A 31 count scores two (2) spaces, whereas, less than 31 scores one (1) space. All cards must be played until 31 or less is reached even if the opponent cannot play.

Spacing o

During the counting of play of 31 or less, spacing or pegging occurs by the players. Two (2) spaces are scored for a perfect 31 and one (1) space for less than 31.

Fifteen-two: Any combination that makes fifteen counts two spaces.

Pair: Playing a card of the same rank which matches scores two (2) spaces.

Playing a card of the third (3) rank that matches scores six (6) spaces.

Playing a card of the fourth (4) rank that matches scores twelve (12) spaces.

Run: Playing three (3) cards in a row that form a sequence or a run scores three (3) spaces. For example, 3, 4, 5 for a count of twelve (12) points and movement of three (3) spaces for the opponent who played the last card. Cards do not need to be in sequence. For example 3, 5, 4 played for acount of twelve (12) points and movement of three (3) spaces. Sequences can also be more that three (3) cards such as 6, 7, 8, 9, played in sequence scoring three and four points respectively.

Counting A Hand o

After the play, lay your cards face up on the simulation game gameboard. This is called the showing and allows both players tocount each others hands to to determine the exact number of spaces for movement of the game tokens.

Counting is always done out loud. Take your time because your opponent is entitled to the counting spaces you miss. This age-old practice is known as Muggins and is called by your opponent after you have moved your game token.

Pone always counts first hand. Pone also moves game tokens first. The Starter Card and four (4) cards dealt constitute the counting hand for each player.

Scoring and combinations are:

Fifteen-two: Each combination of cards that total fifteen score two (2) spaces. Pair: Each pair of cards of the same rank scores two (2) spaces; three (3) pair scores six (6) spaces; four (4) pair scores twelve (12) spaces.

Run: Combinations of three or more in straight sequence score one space for each card in the sequence.

Double Run: Two-three card or four-card straights, including one pair score eight (8) and ten (10) spaces respectively.

Double, Double Run: Two three card straights including two pairs score sixteen (16) spaces.

Triple Run: Three three-card straights, including three of a kind score fifteen (15) spaces.

Flush: Four cards of the same suit in the Hand score four (4) spaces; four cards in the hand or Crib of the same suit as the Starter Card score five (5) spaces. There is no count for a four (4) flush in a Crib.

His Nobs: Jack, in the Hand or Crib, of the same suit as the Starter Card scores one (1) space.

His Heels: Jack, when it is turned up after the cut as the Starter Card scores two (2) spaces.

Scoring A Hand o

The highest possible hand is twenty-nine (29) spaces, J,5,5,5, with 5 of Jack suit cut as the Starter Card.

A double run is a run with one (1) card duplicated such as K,Q,J, 10, Q and scores eight (8) spaces. A triple run is a run of three (3) triplicated such as 2,2,2,3,4 and scores fifteen (15) spaces. 6,6,4,4,5 scores twenty-four(24) which includes eight (8) fifteen-twos and a double, double run of sixteen (16).

Sir John Suckling devised the ultimate scorekeeper by placing a ship's wooden compass between card playing Cribbage players. The ships of this era used a wooden, traverse compass which consisted of drilled compass degree holes for inserting wooden peg lines.

This inventive method of scoring points by players putting pegs in holes allowed Sir John, England's "Greatest Gallant and Greatest Gamester", the time to set the odds and accept wagers from his fellow, English gamesters. circa 1640.
